    Hello,

Many of us that own a Grand Cherokee Limited / Laredo /Overland will often complain about the overheating that may occur when at the lights or in heavy traffic.

Eventually we will have it checked out only to be told the electric fan is no longer working and it should be replaced. 9 out of 10 times the electric fan is functional but it is the fan relay that is not functioning.

In many articles you read about the fan relay even Chrysler is aware that this component often fails and needs to be replaced. The problem is the relay is located in the most unlikely place...below the right hand headlamp housing.

Here is a trick to ensure it is an easy task to replace in the future.

To replace the fan relay Jeep recommends that the entire front of the vehicle must be removed, bumpers, front grill etc. In total a 4 hour job.

    A simple solution.

    1. Remove the right hand headlamp housing 2 bolts and pull it out.

    2. Next take a drill and drill a hold 10cm wide on the very left of the housing when facing the car.

    3. Take some tin snips and widen the access hole.

    It should look like this:

Although this particular job could be neater with the correct cutting tool, you can see the relay is now clearly exposed.

Next unbolt the two retaining nuts and remove and replace the relay.

The headlamp housing has no real use except for appearance so you can now re-install the headlamp and your done.

If the relay fails again you have clear access to make a fast replacement.

Hope this helps and happy Jeeping.
