Interior Module Failure - Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited / Laredo / Overland

It is common knowledge that the Grand Cherokee has a weak point in it's interior electrical system.

Known as the internal PCI bus system, that is a one way message system to the heart of your cars electrics. The problem is, if one module fails some of the other module(s) will start to malfunction also and eventually fail.

Below is a prime example of what can happen and the symptoms of what happens to the other modules. I must also give a special thanks to Tony of the Sunshine Coast, QLD for supplying the parts needed for the repair at a fair and reasonable price, BIG thanks Tony.

    The Symptoms:

    • Left hand mirror stopped operating.
    • Left hand electric window not able to be opened on left hand door but still opened from the master drivers door switch.
    • Sentry key less entry stopped working.
    • Interior light stayed on, but would go off if you turned the dimmer to zero on the light switch.
    • A/C blows only hot air as the compressor would not engage.

    1. Based on these symptoms you would logically point towards the passenger electric window / door lock switch, but at a large cost how do you know?

    2. After further investigation both of the black earth wires in the door jam had worn and broken so they were replaced with a more flexible wire. Still issues but the sentry key less entry starting working again but the indicator lights not longer flashed. The passenger door window started working again but still the A/C was hot and the dome light remained on. So after more research I then disconnected the battery for 20 minutes and still no change.

    The fix

After much reading and talking to some helpful Jeepers I was able to point the electrical finger at the drivers side master switch. Once replaced everything went back to normal and life carried on. This problem is more time consuming than expensive if you diagnose the issue correctly before purchasing the required parts.

    Important Technical Points To Remember

    • The passenger door switch controls the sentry key less entry not the drivers master switch.
    • Any module failure can cause the above symptoms but they may vary in the faults.
    • Chrysler have not sold many body control modules, so the chances of the issue being a failed body control module itself are slim.
    • The switches had a change in 2002-2004 so get the part numbers to match or buy both the drivers and passenger side. Note the passenger side switch replacement will require a dealer to re program the remote using a scanner. Click here to view the programming TSB 08-007-02

Hope this information helps other frustrated Grand Cherokee owners alike. Please add to this thread if you can share more technical knowledge.
